Week 15 - The Guard
Director: John Micheal Mcdonagh
Year of Release:
Genre: Buddy cop comedy
Summary: Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a small town Irish cop and straight laced FBI agent Wendell Everett attempt to stop a international drug smuggling ring that have bribed the entire Ireland police force.
Review: A decent comedy movie with interesting characters. Amazing performances from Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, even though their characters are somewhat over written. The protagonist, Gerry Boyle is sympathetic (despite all his faults and vices) and is definitely the X factor this film needed to stand out.
Biggest problem with the film is that the thick Irish accents can make it hard at times to make out what the characters are actual saying. Because the film is so tightly edited, the heavy accents can cause an audience who isn't used to listening to it to miss vital plot points and information.
In summary, this is definitely a film I would recommend to those who are old enough to watch it, although for those outside of Ireland it might require a second viewing to get all the jokes.
